eye tests

Medicare cardWhen you come for your eye test please bring your Medicare Card, glasses, contact lenses and any other optical aids that you would like checked.

Our optometrist Michelle Beach will conduct your eye test. A general eye test involves checking how well you see, checking whether it would be an advantage for you to wear glasses, contact lenses or other optical aids, checking the health of your eyes and also checking that your eyes are working well together. You should allow around 30mins for your eye test.

The Medicare scheduled fee for a Comprehensive Initial Consultation is $67.15 with $57.10 rebatable from Medicare. You can claim a rebate for one Comprehensive Initial Consultation every 2 years. If you have been tested at another practice within the 2 year period only $28.60 will be rebatable from Medicare. We can let you know the fees applicable before we begin your eye test if you provide us with your Medicare Card details.

You may like to consider having retinal photos taken of your eyes which costs $30 for both eyes. These photographs use the latest in digital photography technology to provide more information about the health of your eyes than is otherwise available during a standard length eyetest. It is recommended that these photos are taken every 2 years or more often if required. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and this technology allows us to compare the appearance of your eyes over the years to detect small changes. Don't forget to let the optometrist know that you would like retinal photos.

If you have difficulty with your vision in between each 2 year period then please give us a phone call to make another appointment. Medicare will provide a rebate towards subsequent consultations in between each 2 year period if they are clinically required.

Medicare generally doesn't provide rebates for contact lens related eye tests so please check with our staff to see if you will need to pay for your eye test. Contact lens fittings cost $60 and yearly contact lens prescription renewals cost $30.

If you don't have a Medicare Card, then the same fees apply but are not rebatable from Medicare. However, you may be able to claim though your private health fund.

diabetic eye tests

It is recommended that diabetic people have their eyes tested on a yearly basis to check the vision, glasses, natural lens, retina and general eye health. It is best if we dilate your pupils so that the optometrist can get a really good look at the retina ("back of the eye").

The pupil dilation drops take about half an hour to work so please allow around 1.5 hours for your eye test. Expect to lounge about on our couches for 30mins while we wait for the drops to work too! Please bring a pair of sunglasses (or buy a cool pair while you wait!) to wear as the drops leave your eyes dilated for several hours after they are put in.

Your vision might be quite blurry too so catch the bus, taxi or ask a friend to drive you.

police and industry vision screenings

Wanna join the Police Force? We can do your Police Vision Screening for you and it usually only takes 10 minutes. Please bring your glasses or contact lenses. Police Screening cannot be billed to Medicare and cost $30.

Other industry screenings are also easliy arranged so please allow 30mins for your screening. Some organisations allow us to direct bill them and others require that you pay for your screening and then you are reimbursed by your organisation. These screenings cost about $30-$60.

We can also arrange for Michelle our Optometrist to visit your workplace to perform in office screenings. Ask us all about it!
